Tasks of the QUPR are to <strong>prevent<\/strong> possible defective behavior and<strong> investigate<\/strong> and resolve those reported by customers through the Technical Assistance Service (SAT). Among its duties, there is therefore also that of being able to issue, as in the automotive field, <strong>Engineering Change Notes<\/strong> (ECN) and, in the most serious cases, real <strong>recall actions<\/strong>. The QUPR often works closely with <strong>EOS<\/strong>, the department dedicated to the development of embedded operating systems. With these notes we wish to let our customers <strong>know<\/strong> the <strong>silent commitmen<\/strong>t of these departments, the <strong>foundation<\/strong> of the quality of our products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We remind you that those who choose AEP are protected even after the warranty period, with the certainty of being able to obtain service and spare parts for ten years from the date of purchase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/lab-grande.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Dubbi.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>Define the problem<\/h2>\n<h2>Support for at least 10 years<\/h2>\n<div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The dcvices used for <strong>electronic ticketing<\/strong> must meet various requirements that depend on the specific application:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they have to operate in <strong>difficult environments<\/strong> due to <strong>vibrations<\/strong>, <strong>shocks<\/strong>, too high or too low <strong>temperatures<\/strong>, often with <strong>supply voltage<\/strong> not perfect or far from the nominal value.<\/li>\n<li>they have to operate for <strong>prolonged periods of time<\/strong>, often even H24;<\/li>\n<li>they must be very <strong>reliable<\/strong>: when, for whatever reason, they go out of service, they always cause a <strong>damage<\/strong> of some <strong>importance<\/strong>: they reduce revenues, generate dissatisfaction in the Customers, they need an intervention sometimes also on site, with the consequent need to move personnel;<\/li>\n<li>above all, and this is the most difficult point, their support <strong>must be guaranteed for 10 years<\/strong>, hopefully for a longer time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Ten years is too long?<\/h2>\n<h2>Support for at least 10 years<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>In today&#8217;s electronic market, where the <strong>latest<\/strong> <strong>model<\/strong> of smartphone already looks old after a few months, <strong>ten years<\/strong> is a <strong>long time<\/strong>. If many of us can afford the <strong>luxury<\/strong> of always showing off the <strong>latest model of smartphone<\/strong>, there are very few transport companies that want to decide to switch to a <strong>new ticketing system<\/strong> after a <strong>short time<\/strong> after the installation of the first one. There are<strong> many<\/strong> buses and installation is certainly not too easy. The guarantee of support for <strong>ten years<\/strong> is therefore a <strong>completely understandable<\/strong> requirement for the valorization of <strong>investments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AEP guarantees the support for its products for at least 10 years after sale.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/10-anni.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Cosa-pu\u00f2-accadere.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>What can happen in 10 years?<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The requirement of support for <strong>10 years<\/strong> and more introduces <strong>completely new<\/strong> problems compared to consumer electronics. In one or two years, for example, some inconvenience&#8230; simply do <strong>not have enough time to emerge<\/strong>, while others end up being <strong>accepted<\/strong> by the customer, who will &#8220;change it soon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of professional devices, such as those of electronic ticketing, things are just <strong>more complex<\/strong>. First, there is the <strong>natural aging<\/strong>:\u00a0 rules not different from those of us human beings are valid also for electronics. Then, in so long period, we can assume that the <strong>conditions of the context<\/strong> may change, for example the passage from one generation to the other of the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>telephone <\/strong><strong>standards<\/strong>, the implementation of the <strong>company networks<\/strong>, the expectations of the Customers and so on.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the possibility that the device is affected by <strong>original defects<\/strong> that appear only after a certain period of time. We are talking about <strong>sophisticated<\/strong> objects, made up of <strong>hundreds <\/strong>or even <strong>thousands<\/strong> of components and with <strong>complex<\/strong> software, for which it is impossible to test all combinations of conditions (sometimes faulty behavior is discovered <strong>by chance<\/strong> without anyone having detected it).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Who is without sin?<\/h2>\n<h2>No one is immune from risk<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Some people may believe that certain defects can <strong>only<\/strong> affect poor quality <strong>products<\/strong>. It is certain that a <strong>good concept<\/strong>, a <strong>good design<\/strong>, the <strong>careful choice of materials<\/strong> and<strong> correct production processes<\/strong> lead to a better level of quality, but it would be completely wrong to believe that this could lead to<strong> zero defects<\/strong>. The <strong>unexpected<\/strong> can affect <strong>not only the manufacturer<\/strong> of the device, but also <strong>all its suppliers<\/strong>, <strong>suppliers of suppliers<\/strong> and so on, including <strong>primary and renowned brands<\/strong>. The occurrence of these <strong>eventualities<\/strong>, completely <strong>physiological<\/strong> and <strong>predictable<\/strong>, is therefore not a vulnus in the Quality process. It is simply essential to <strong>foresee<\/strong> them and have the necessary<strong> organization<\/strong> to <strong>manage them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Adamo-ed-Eva.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Riparazioni.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>Impossible repairs?<\/h2>\n<h2>If a component disappears<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Supporting<\/strong> a product implies the ability to provide all necessary <strong>spare parts<\/strong>. So what happens when a component is <strong>no longer available<\/strong>? This is a much <strong>less rare<\/strong> occurrence than you might think, especially if you are looking at <strong>tens of years<\/strong>. In the case of a <strong>consumer<\/strong> device the answer is easy: you <strong>throw it away<\/strong>. But if the device is instead, for example, a <strong>validator<\/strong>? In this case the solution is only one: you have to <strong>design<\/strong> a kit, called <strong>retrofit<\/strong>, able to <strong>emulate<\/strong> in some way the missing part, often having to <strong>modify the application software<\/strong>, the <strong>driver<\/strong> or even the <strong>operating system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>And the operating systems?<\/h2>\n<h2>A problem within a problem<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The problems examined so far are <strong>worsened<\/strong> by the fact that the devices are now of an <strong>advanced<\/strong> type and based on <strong>operating system<\/strong>. It is absolutely obvious that no OS version lasts for as long as, for example, for <strong>ten years<\/strong>. Even assuming that other problems do not arise, a device that is not possible to <strong>update the operating system<\/strong> becomes fatally <strong>unusable<\/strong> in a few years.<\/p>\n<p>But upgrading the operating system is never <strong>without consequences<\/strong>; on the contrary, the operating system itself is often <strong>a source of problems<\/strong>. It is therefore necessary that the new distribution has been made by <strong>specialists<\/strong> who guarantee its perfect compatibility with the <strong>hardware<\/strong> in question, which is <strong>never done by chance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Sistemi-operativi.jpg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<img src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Embedded.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2>The EOS department of AEP<\/h2>\n<h2>Embedded Operating Systems support<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>In <strong>mission critical<\/strong> embedded systems, such as validators and on-board computers, where hardware and software are <strong>strongly interconnected<\/strong>, it is not possible to adopt <strong>normal<\/strong> operating system distributions. Many of the problems that a home or office user does not find dramatic, are instead <strong>completely unacceptable<\/strong> on equipment that is supposed to operate up to 24 hours a day and performs tasks of <strong>economic importance<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AEP has a department called <strong>Embedded Operating System<\/strong> (EOS) where <strong>highly specialized<\/strong> technicians, competent both in <strong>software<\/strong> and <strong>hardware<\/strong>, develop and support <strong>Linux<\/strong> operating system distributions to <strong>make it suitable to equip AEP devices<\/strong>. They are constantly working to perform <strong>tests<\/strong>, develop <strong>drivers<\/strong>, <strong>solve problems<\/strong>, study <strong>electronic components<\/strong> and guarantee the devices <strong>service continuity<\/strong> to Customers over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Some examples<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Here are some examples of the work of the EOS department:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Added possibility to perform a clean OS installation (for upgrade, downgrade or restore) without losing the application and its data<\/li>\n<li>OOptimization for embedded devices. Small size installer (180 MB) that includes all the sw and libraries requested so far by our Customers<\/li>\n<li>Dual OS copy to ensure that the device remains operational even if the installation is interrupted<\/li>\n<li>Abstraction of all hardware peripherals typical of AEP devices (QR-code reader, contactless reader, GPIO, backlight, GPS, modem, etc.) in order to have a uniform interface even on very different devices<\/li>\n<li>Remotely upgradeable firmware of various devices (e.g. MODEM and QR-code reader)<\/li>\n<li>Search for the most stable and reliable module combinations, which are not necessarily those of the latest official distribution<\/li>\n<li>Compensation for any problems with third-party subassemblies<\/li>\n<li>Adaptation to any particularities not provided for by standard software<\/li>\n<li>Added watchdog to ensure system reboot in case of deadlock at kernel level<\/li>\n<li>Improved I2C bus management to support devices that in particular conditions keep the I2C channel occupied<\/li>\n<li>Fix the kernel driver to allow concurrent access to general purpose I\/O<\/li>\n<li>Added standard software packages according to customer requirements (application developers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--
